Our Mission
Apono Hawaii is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Kealakekua on Hawaii's Big Island. The word "Apono" means "to approve, to accept, to bless" in the Hawaiian language — a name that reflects our deep commitment to affirming the dignity and worth of every person we serve. We work alongside individuals, families, and communities to provide the support, resources, and encouragement needed to overcome life's challenges and build a better future.
Our mission is to empower the people of Hawaii's Big Island through accessible community services, compassionate outreach, and collaborative partnerships that address the root causes of hardship. We envision a Big Island community where every person has the opportunity to thrive — where basic needs are met, families are supported, and individuals are empowered to reach their full potential.
Hawaii's Big Island is a place of extraordinary beauty, but many of its residents face significant challenges including poverty, housing insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and social isolation. Apono Hawaii was founded to be a trusted, accessible resource for those in need — a place where people can find help, hope, and a pathway to greater stability and well-being.
Our programs are designed to address the most pressing needs of Big Island residents, from immediate assistance to long-term empowerment.
Direct outreach to individuals and families in need across the Big Island, connecting them with essential services including food assistance, housing support, and emergency financial aid.
Evidence-based programs supporting families through parenting education, counseling referrals, youth mentorship, and family resource navigation to build resilience and stability.
Mobilizing community volunteers for service projects, environmental stewardship, and civic initiatives that strengthen the social fabric of Kealakekua and surrounding communities.
Since our founding, Apono Hawaii has served hundreds of individuals and families across the Big Island, providing critical support during times of crisis and building long-term pathways to stability and self-sufficiency. Our work is made possible by a dedicated network of volunteers, donors, and community partners who share our belief that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity to flourish. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate Big Island community.
